This review comprehensively covers the latest advancements in surface modification technologies for cells, involving materials like nanoparticles, microparticles, and polymeric coatings, emphasizing their contributions to enhanced carrier cell function and improved therapeutic outcomes. The benefits of these surface-modified cells are multifaceted, encompassing carrier cell preservation, reduced particle elimination, enhanced cell transport, the masking of cell surface antigens, adjustments in the inflammatory response of carrier cells, and the targeted delivery of therapeutic agents. Although most of these technologies remain in the experimental phase, encouraging therapeutic efficacy demonstrated in both laboratory and live-animal studies has established a solid groundwork for further research leading to eventual clinical applications. Cell surface engineering using materials promises a variety of advantages for cell therapy, cultivating novel capabilities for improved treatment effectiveness and reshaping the fundamental and translational advancements in cell therapies.
